Tangle Free Tips

Tangle-Free Tips: How to Keep Your Hair Smooth, Soft, and Totally Snag-Free

Let’s talk tangles. If you’ve ever spent more time than you care to admit wrestling a brush through your hair (or your kiddo’s!), you’re not alone. Tangles can be frustrating — not to mention damaging — but the good news is: they don’t have to be part of your everyday routine.

Here are a few of my go-to tangle-free tips that I share with guests in my salon chair — and they’re too good not to pass on to you!

1. Detangle Before You Wash

One of the easiest ways to prevent a mess of knots post-shower? Start with a smooth canvas. Run a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush through your dry hair before you hop in the shower. This helps loosen any shed hairs and smooth out tangles that will only get worse when wet.

2. Conditioner Is Your Best Friend

Don’t skimp on the conditioner — especially if your hair is long, fine, curly, or prone to frizz. Focus on mid-shaft to ends (the oldest, driest part of your hair) and let it sit for a few minutes while you shower. Bonus tip: Use a wide-tooth comb in the shower to gently work it through and evenly distribute it.

3. Skip the Terry Cloth Towel

Yep, your towel could be the troublemaker. Traditional towels can rough up the cuticle and cause friction, which leads to tangles. Instead, use a soft microfiber towel or even a cotton t-shirt to gently squeeze out excess water — no rubbing!

4. Start at the Bottom

When brushing, always start at the ends and work your way up. This reduces breakage and makes the process so much easier. It’s a small change that makes a huge difference in how your hair feels and behaves.

5. Use the Right Products

Leave-in conditioners and detangling sprays are game-changers — especially for kids, curly hair, or anyone who battles post-shower knots. I carry a few of my personal favorites at the salon, and I’m always happy to help you choose one that fits your hair type.

(Pssst… if you ever feel totally stuck, bring your tangle drama to my chair — we can work through it together.)

6. Protect Before Bed

If you wake up with a rat’s nest, try switching to a silk or satin pillowcase. You can also loosely braid your hair at night or pop it in a soft scrunchie or braid to prevent tangles while you sleep.
